Characterizing active learning environments in physics using latent profile analysis

The vast majority of research involving active learning pedagogies uses passive lecture methods as a baseline. We propose to move beyond such comparisons understand the mechanisms that make different styles unique. Here, we use COPUS observations record student and instructor activities in six known physics, latent profile analysis classify these observations. Latent using two profiles successfully groups into interactive lecturelike other. Five sorts lecturelike, Modeling Instruction, ISLE labs, context-rich problems recitationlike or discussionlike.
